This alley house is a sophisticated urban retreat tucked into one of Denver’s hottest neighborhoods on an obscure, previously forgotten alley lot that others dismissed as unbuildable. The space is designed to provide an investment-savvy professional a warm and comfortable space in the city and showcase his prized auto collection.
Built of a raw palette fitting to its environment of concrete block, exposed concrete, zinc cladding and custom steel and glass openings, the design is intended to frame an interior courtyard with a main residence and guest house, both opening onto the protected courtyard, which is sheltered from the adjacent alley and commercial uses. The two-story volume of the main house is compact in plan but lives very large, benefiting from dramatic custom 2-story steel and glass doors which connect the main living space to the outdoor room. The adjacent detached 500 sq. ft. guest house includes a modest ground floor living room with kitchenette, with a dramatic master suite above overlooking the shared courtyard and pool.
The courtyard includes a plunge pool, fire pit, bamboo hedge and a view into the auto collection and serves as an outdoor room for both residences. The 1,194 square-foot, four-car garage is finished with showroom quality and has glass walls separating it from the courtyard to allow viewing of the multiple historic, classic automobiles and motorcycles from within the interior space and private courtyard. The garage was also designed to host annual large dinner gatherings benefiting from the openness into the courtyard and residence.
Taken together, the entire space provides a welcome oasis in a busy urban setting.
